funk carioca

Urban Violence is the element that guide perception among the street and slum on Rio de Janeiro. A violence whose origin is found on slum, where live the poor, on streets that “suffer” because of that, the practice of informal trading of market.

For some people it’s just a promess of Modern Age, violence that’s projected and ritualized for young men troughout the “Carioca’s Funk”. Funk is thought like a ritual where all violence is acted, as if a theater. Funk is used to affirm central points of social lifestyle, relationships, sexualities and friendships.

But; to talking about violence can not be talking about poor people or funk, to talk about violence is to talk about society, we can’t accept the idea to criminalize poor and misery. Fights, crimes, drugs, can happen among folks and don’t care if they are richs or poor.

Funk find your strength in to be independents of media and because it’s a symbol of social resistance of culture. Although carioca funk is a good example of resistance culture, it’s not a consciousness phenomena used as a political tool. Funk is just a leisure tool , but it’s the most important thing to join street people (people from formal city) and slum people.

We want, throughout this document, present the Coletivo Cultural Consciência Criativa (Cultural Group Creative Consciousness) and Social friendship.

We are from Rio de Janeiro, and we were grown up in this city in which now there is a strong dichotomy of social inequality. Our city, which had been known as Marvelous City, suffers from a cultural segregation, since that most of the population are far away of the main leisure and cultural centers. Our public schools are also precarious and obsolete, and there are too many students for a little quantity of schools. We consider Rio's present situation a true social apartheid, in where there is a confusion between poverty and criminality.

Inside this conjuncture we:

have the desire of construct a new possibility of valorization of these who are now excluded from every form of intellectual development,
because of public schools' precariouness, and/or the lack of leisure and cultural centers. We want to elaborate projects such as:

- Development of communitary libraries
- Production of cultural events such as shows, plays and other artistic presentations
- Development of ecological conciousness

We believe that every action tool that is available must be used in favor of education and intellectual development for the construction of
citizenship and decrease of violence's rates.
